How to Handle Holiday Stress On Your Period

How to Handle Holiday Stress On Your Period

Tis the season for holiday cheer, family get-togethers, and (potentially) stressful situations. Cue: your period.

With all the stressors of the holidays, adding your period into the equation can make being merry and “on” for a number of days, a challenge (to say the least). Thankfully, there are steps you can take to help ease your anxiety – whether that’s holiday blues, PMS stress, or a mix of the two – setting you up for a very merry time.

Take Time Outs

When things are heating up, it’s often best to take a moment. Or twenty. While time outs were a nightmare during the childhood, they can be a very welcome escape when you’re an adult. Find your happy place and go there – solo.

Walk Away (Ideally Outside)

Fresh air can do wonders for the body, mind, and the soul. It gives you the space to unwind, cools you down (inside and out), and lets you walk whatever “it” is, off.

Work it Out

It’s no secret that exercise is restorative. While you might not want to work out on your period, there are easy moves you can make (like yoga) or if you’re up for something more heart-pounding, find what works for you to help ease your anxiety and welcome those awesome endorphins into your life.

Rest Up

While it can be challenging to sleep on your period, getting good rest is essential, especially during times of stress. It’s essential for your health and key to maintaining the kinds of energy levels you need to power through the holidays.

Get Frisky

During those waking hours, it’s not a bad idea to steal yourself and your special someone away for some sweet loving. After all, orgasms can help ease your cramps – and they boost your mood!

Moderation Maybe?

Disclaimer: This one may be tough, but laying off the booze and caffeine is often recommended when you’re on your period. While it may not be possible during a family gathering when the vino (and stress inducing conversation) is flowing, maybe try moderation.

Give Back

One of the most grounding things you can do for yourself (and others) is volunteering – giving back yields gratitude, which is an immense gift and by helping others, you help yourself. Do good, feel good.

And always remember to breathe – you’ve got this.
