When your PMS is raging, it’s not uncommon to crave sweets and reach for something yummy that helps you forget your troubles for a few delicious moments.

But why do we crave sweets during our period? Is it something our body needs or just a feel good fix we’ve learned along the road of womanhood? Maybe a little bit of both.

Craving sweets can be a sign of low blood sugar, especially when coupled with headaches and feelings of sleepiness. According to Live Strong, “Some women’s bodies become more responsive to insulin during their monthly cycle, making them more prone to blood sugar drops. The brain instigates a sugar craving in response to the need for more fuel.”

Also when we menstruate, our oestrogen and progesterone levels go down and this can translate into a sense of discomfort and stress. (Yes, yes it can.) These PMS mood swings often include a drop in serotonin levels, which triggers cravings for comfort foods like carbs and sweets. That’s because these foods offer an immediate pick-me-up, a sugary boost of energy in the form of mood-enhancing neurotransmitters.

Then there’s the emotional element of an indulgence, that feel good fix that sweets and treats offer. It’s a physical (and gastronomical) reward you are gifting yourself, an act of self-love that usually feels as good as it tastes. At least in that moment.

This is no secret, but while it might taste great, a sugary infusion won’t really nourish you and can lead to a big crash, but there are healthy ways to satiate you when you crave sweets. And tasty ones too!
